A Nice Day at Fenway
By David Berndt, SRFS Board Member
It was a nice Sunday afternoon at Fenway Park, when BU retirees and guests gathered in RF Grandstand Section 4 on June 29th to watch the Red Sox take on the Toronto Blue Jays. The Blue Jays had pounded the Sox 9-0 on Friday, June 27th and the Sox had responded in kind with a 15-1 win on Saturday, June 28th. So expectations were high for the Sox to take the rubber game to win the weekend series that Sunday.
However, expectations were immediately dampened. While pitcher Walker Buehler did not take the day off, he did struggle again, giving up back-to-back home runs in the first inning for a 2-0 Toronto lead, which the Blue Jays never relinquished. The Red Sox responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the second to tie the game and ultimately out hit the Blue Jays 8 to 6. Rising star, rookie Right Fielder Roman Anthony went 2 for 4 and Left Fielder Jarren Duran hit his ninth triple of the season with one out in the 6th. Unfortunately, the Sox were down 5-3 by then and somehow could never capitalize on their opportunities to come back.
While BU retiree fans were no doubt disappointed when they left Fenway that day, they could take some consolation in the nice weather and the fact that they had seen some promising young players who may well begin to hit their stride one of these days. Who knows, the Sox may even make the playoffs this year.
Whether they do or not, retirees will have another chance to purchase two tickets to a Red Sox game this season for the Sunday afternoon game on August 17th against the Miami Marlins. If you are interested, get your tickets ($15 each) starting on July 15. The June 29th Toronto tickets went fast.
