Leaves of Absence

Boston University recognizes the importance of your family and your health. That’s why we offer several types of leaves of absence to address personal illnesses, the illnesses and/or care of immediate family members, military service, and personal matters. These leaves include Family and Medical Leave (for eligible employees), Maternity Leave, Medical Leave, Personal Leave, Sympathy Leave, and Military Leave.

To initiate any type of leave of absence, an employee must submit to Human Resources a written request for the leave via leaves@bu.edu or the linked form completed and dropped off at HR. HR will in turn notify the department if the leave is approved.

Employees who are requesting a Family and Medical Leave of Absence must complete the Staff Request/Notification for Leave form.
