Hello! My name is Adeola Akinyemi. I’m currently a second-year student at BUSSW. I’m enrolled in the traditional two-year program as a Clinical Practice major and intend to enroll in the Children, Youth and Families specialization.
I’m from Brooklyn, NY (born and raised!). I graduated from my undergrad in May 2021 as a Psychology major with minors in History and Pre-Professional Health and began my social work journey at BU in the Fall of 2021.
I love to work with children and adolescents and am passionate about including the performing arts like dance, theatre and music into alternative forms of therapy. I aspire to become a licensed clinical social worker and support individuals in various forms of therapy and through advocacy and social justice. As an aspiring Black mental health professional, I hope to represent individuals of color. I eventually want to open up my own private practice and ensure that sliding scale fees and affordable services are offered to people in the communities I serve. I also want to support immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers in getting the resources and help they need.
At my current MSW internship, I conduct play therapy sessions and strengths-based assessments for pre-kindergarten through fifth grade students, aged 4-10. Additionally, I support both students and staff in various classroom settings and collaborate with the school’s adjustment counselor, teachers, and other support staff to ensure the well-being of all students and families. During the second half of my internship, I will be collaborating with teachers and support staff to create and lead groups and activities that focus on children’s social emotional learning. Using my passion for the visual and performing arts, I intend to implement dance, theatre, music, and other forms of arts into these groups and activities.
