9/8: Prof. Spencer Speaks on Meaningful Engagement of Caregivers of Color

BU School of Social Work Professor Renée Spencer is one of several speakers at an upcoming national mentoring roundtable event, “Meaningful Engagement of Caregivers of Color.” The roundtable “seeks to deepen the exploration of the ways in which mentee caregivers are essential to quality matches and to their children’s futures. And consider the ways in which mentoring programs, along with other service systems, often devalue, alienate, and exclude parents of color and of working-class backgrounds in regards to their children’s development and systems involvement.” The event is free and open to the public.
“I am so pleased to see the growing interest in caregiver engagement in mentoring,” says Prof. Spencer. “This is long overdue. I am proud to have colleagues like Henry Roberts, with Peacemakers, Inc., and Dustianne North at the California Mentoring Partnership, who are leading the way and who recognize the need to dismantle racism in order to encourage the kind of meaningful engagement with parents of color that will promote transformational change in the field of youth mentoring.”
