Recently, Associate Professor Jennifer M. Gómez from Boston University School of Social Work (BUSSW), was a guest at the Intersectionality Training Institute’s Intersectionality Research Salon to speak on two areas of her expertise: cultural betrayal trauma theory, dreamstorming, plus her career trajectory Prof. Gómez’s research gives voice and legitimacy to experiences that are often silenced or misunderstood. Her work helps practitioners, policymakers, and survivors recognize the complex intersections that shape trauma to inform healing and justice and improve support systems.

In this salon, Prof. Gómez explores key ideas from her award-winning book, The Cultural Betrayal of Black Women & Girls: A Black Feminist Approach to Healing from Sexual Abuse, which covers the complexities of cultural betrayal—harm that occurs within communities that are expected to provide protection against racism—and examines how misogynoir (the combination of anti-black racism and misogyny directed towards black women) further shapes the experiences of Black women and girls.

Prof. Gómez also introduced her practice of “dreamstorming,” a method for imagining and working toward a world defined by peace and equality to create a positive impact amid today’s climate of regression. Her salon offers a candid look into her research and writing approach, highlighting how she has balanced collaborative and solo authorship throughout her career.
