BUSSW Lecturer Cristina Brinkerhoff Testifies on Behalf of the Safe Communities Act
Cristina Brinkerhoff, lecturer at Boston University’s School of Social Work (BUSSW), testifies on Nov. 25 in Massachusetts on behalf of the Safe Communities Act (S.1681) (Sens. Eldridge and Miranda), H.2580 (Reps. Cruz and Sousa).
The Safe Communities Act is focused on limiting local law enforcement involvement in federal immigration enforcement. By preventing local police from acting as immigration agents, immigrant residents can seek services and report crimes without fear of deportation.
This bill includes components such as:
- Prohibit questioning by court and police officials about immigration status
- Protect basic rights, just like a “Miranda” warning
- Protect access to justice in our courts
- Prohibit 287(g) collaboration agreements that make local law
With her testimony, Brinkerhoff is helping to shape state policy by offering expert insight to lawmakers on how the bill impacts immigrant communities and public safety.
