BUSSW Researchers Lead Global HIV-Stigma Study
Boston University School of Social Work (BUSSW) researchers are leading a multidisciplinary study aimed at deepening the understanding of HIV-related stigma and its impact on the wellbeing of People Living with AIDS (PLWA) and their communities in sub-Saharan Africa. The research, led by Professor Margaret Lombe and Assistant Dean of Teaching and Innovation, Lyndsey McMahan, identifies factors contributing to HIV-stigma, its manifestations, and its effects on individuals and communities.
Future research phases will include consultations with experts, listening sessions with community partners, and a Knowledge Sharing Platform that brings together academics, practitioners, and community representatives to share insights and strategies for change.
As part of this ongoing work, the research team hosted a webinar convening a multidisciplinary panel of experts to discuss the current state of knowledge surrounding HIV-stigma in sub-Saharan Africa and other low- and middle-income countries. The session drew an engaged audience of academic collaborators, community organizations, and public officials from across Boston.
The expert panel underscored the urgent need for collaborative, community-driven approaches to dismantle stigma and improve the lives of people affected by HIV/AIDS.
