Prof. Jennifer Gomez stands on a street corner

In a recent thought-provoking presentation, Associate Professor Jennifer M. Gómez from BU School of Social Work (BUSSW), delivered a talk titled “Beyond Cultural Betrayal: The Role of Secondary Marginalization Against Black Women” as part of the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues (SPSSI) webinar series, “Beyond the Ivory Tower: Bringing Activist Conversations to Academic Spaces.”

Prof. Gomez explores the complex intersections of racism, sexism, violence, and healing through the lens of her Cultural Betrayal Trauma Theory.

The talk, now available on YouTube, includes both a lecture and Q&A session, and invites participants to examine how systems of oppression compound harm against Black women and girls — and how communities can move toward justice and restoration.

In her remarks, Dr. Gómez challenged audiences to confront the intertwined nature of oppression and violence.
