Professor Hyeouk Chris Hahm was a featured expert at the Society for Social Work Research’s 2022 Annual Conference for the symposium From Exclusion to Inclusion: Un-erasing Asian identities and dismantling systemic racism through Praxis. Prof Hahm shared her research and experience on Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) populations including AAPI researchers who have suffered from systematic racism and the unequal distribution of federal funding.  Specifically, only 0.17% of funding from NIH was allocated toward clinical research on AAPI including Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders for the last 26 years.  In addition to the low allocation of funds toward AAPI research, low funding rates of AAPI social scientists have been pervasive. For instance, AAPI social science researchers are 74% less likely than their white counterparts to be funded for NIH/NSF grants from 2000-2006.  In addition, only 5% of NIH funds were distributed to research training awards and fellowships for AAPI trainees from 1992-2018.
