Biography

Lora teaches courses in health economics, antiretroviral therapy management, public health ethics, and individual, community and population health for MPH and DrPH students, and conducts research on behavioral interventions and applied economics related to child health and welfare, HIV and AIDS, malaria, and other infectious diseases in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Her current and recent projects include: investigating TB-related stigma in India; studying the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of a hospital quality improvement intervention in Ghana; assessing the feasibility, acceptability, and efficacy of triggered reminders to improve HIV treatment retention and adherence among pregnant and post-partum women in Uganda; evaluating active text messaging to improve knowledge and support continuing medical education among medical care providers (community-based health workers and HIV providers) in Vietnam; assessing the impact of real-time feedback to improve adherence to antiretroviral therapy among HIV-positive individuals in China; exploratory studies of men who have sex with men and of barriers and facilitators of retention in HIV care in Ghana; studies assessing the attitudes, knowledge, and behaviors related to malaria prevention and treatment among pregnant women in East and Central India; a validation study of the Child Status Index in Malawi; and a cost-effectiveness study of a package of neonatal interventions designed to reduce neonatal mortality in rural Zambia. Dr. Sabin frequently teaches in executive and professional training programs based in the US (Harvard University, Duke University) and was a member of the core faculty of the Vietnam AIDS Policy and Planning Project, a training program designed to strengthen the response to the HIV epidemic for local and national government officials in Vietnam. Before joining the BUSPH, Lora worked in the Asia Public Policy Program at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government and at the Harvard Institute for International Development. While there, she served as the Academic Director of the Fulbright Economics Teaching Program, a Harvard-managed academic center in Ho Chi Minh City, from 1998-2001. Lora has lived in East Asia for ten years and has taught at universities and academic centers in China, Taiwan, and Vietnam. She holds a MA in East Asian Studies and PhD in Political Economy and Government from Harvard University.
