MPH Student Leads Tree Planting Initiative at Boston Green Academy
On October 3, students from Boston Green Academy (BGA) planted Brighton’s first Miyawaki micro-forest in partnership with Boston University’s 2024 Climate Innovation Challenge Grand Prize Winner, HeatWise: An EcoEquity Initiative, led by MPH student Megan Ryder.

The new 17’×36’ forest plot hosts a dense mix of native trees and shrubs designed using the Miyawaki method, an ecological approach that accelerates growth and biodiversity in small urban spaces. The forest will act as a living laboratory, giving students the chance to observe and measure how urban trees improve air quality, cool local temperatures, and support wildlife.

“This is more than just planting trees, it’s a way for students to lead citizen science and environmental justice initiatives in their community” says Ryder. “Together, we have taken a small step towards restoring urban green space in an area with low tree canopy coverage, one that will grow with and for BGA students and the larger Brighton community.”
