Alum Receives Educator Award from Pulmonary Organization.
Shaheen Islam (SPH’93) has received the 2018 Educator Award from the American Association of Interventional Pulmonary Program Directors (AIPPD). The award, which the organization presented to Islam on December 28, 2018, recognizes contributions to education in interventional pulmonary.
Islam, the chief of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine in the Department of Medicine at Augusta University’s Medical College of Georgia, has served as a research, academic, and clinical mentor to numerous medical students, residents, and fellows.
Islam says that interventional pulmonology is a newer discipline, and teaching it has proven a rewarding experience.
“When I explain a complex theory or concept to the students or residents using simple analogies and they understand it, that is a treasured moment for me,” he says.
Islam is co-chair of AIPPD’s education committee and also leads the bronchoscopy procedure accreditation committee of the American Association of Bronchology and Interventional Pulmonology. He received his medical degree from Sir Salimullah Medical College at the University of Dhaka in Bangladesh, then completed his residency in internal medicine at Michigan State University’s McLaren Regional Medical Center. He also completed fellowships in pulmonary and critical care medicine at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Mass.
Prior to joining the Medical College of Georgia in July 2018, Islam served as director of interventional pulmonology and the interventional pulmonology fellowship program at Ohio State University.
Islam is also the academic editor of the journal Medicine and an editorial board member of the journals Clinical Research in Pulmonology, Austin Journal of Pulmonary and Respiratory Medicine, and Pleura.
