The Activist Lab presented the Gail Douglas Award for Excellence in Public Health Practice to two colleagues from the Boston Housing Authority (BHA) on September 28.

Rachel Goodman is director of community services at BHA, and John Kane is senior program coordinator.

Associate Dean for Public Health Practice Harold Cox and Assistant Dean for Public Health Practice Anne Fidler presented the award.

“Our two recipients understand the importance of creating a housing environment that promotes the health of residents,” Fidler says, “especially those who are most vulnerable and at risk.”

She says Goodman and Kane have been valuable partners to SPH for more than 15 years through the Partnership in Health and Housing. “They have contributed to research and service projects addressing the needs of public housing residents, and have taught and mentored our students in the classroom and through the practicum,” Fidler says. “Residents of public housing have benefited from our collaborative efforts, and students, faculty, and staff at SPH have benefited from their knowledge, hard work, and dedication.”

The Gail Douglas Award for Excellence in Public Health Practice was created in 2006 in honor of Gail H. Douglas (’88), retired SPH faculty member and former acting dean of public health practice. The award honors public health practitioners in the community, selected by the SPH Practice Committee, Cox, and Dean Sandro Galea.
