Writing Samples & Providing References.
Writing Samples
If the position requires strong written communication skills, you may be asked to submit a sample of your writing.
When possible, use writing samples that match the type of writing that the position would involve. Choose samples that represent a full range of skills: those that show how well you summarize and convey complex ideas, research papers, editorials, articles, journals, or blogs.
Here are some tips on what to provide:
- Writing samples in general should be 1-4 pages long. Reviewers are generally looking for content and how you get your ideas across.
- You may use an excerpt from a longer paper as long as it makes sense out of context.
- It is best to use a sample where you are the sole author.
- Protect any confidential information in your document.
- Always double check for errors.

Providing References
Most jobs will ask applicants to provide a list of professional references who can speak to their abilities and work ethic.
- References could be from professors, previous employers, or supervisors from relevant public health practicums or internships. Strong references are from people that know you well.
- Always ask your references ahead of time if you can use them in this capacity.
