Start your application
Applications must be complete (all materials received) and verified by SOPHAS by the final deadlines.
*The priority deadline is not a hard deadline. We encourage applicants to submit by the priority deadline as seats and scholarship are more plentiful at the beginning of the cycle and a decision would be released earlier. Applicants will still be considered for scholarship after the priority deadline.
SOPHAS can take 2-4 weeks to verify an application, so we would highly recommend that you submit your application early to ensure you meet the appropriate deadline.
Prerequisites
Education:
Applicants from all undergraduate majors and backgrounds are acceptable and encouraged to apply. Successful candidates display a solid mix of quantitative, verbal and reasoning skills.
Experience:
None required. Work, volunteer, research, and/or internship experience relevant to public health is valued in the review process.

SOPHAS Program Designation
All
16 MPH certificates are listed on SOPHAS as individual program designations. Your choice has no bearing on the admissions process and is non-binding. We seek on-campus MPH candidates that would be successful in all areas of our program in recognition that public health is an interdisciplinary field of study and practice. There is also an option for ‘undecided’, which allows you to be considered for admission without choosing a certificate at the time of application. All students will have the opportunity to finalize their certificate choice(s) within their first semester of the program.
Standardized Test Scores
A GRE score is not required for application to BU School of Public Health and will not be considered if submitted.
International applicants must submit an English language proficiency exam. Applicants may submit the TOEFL or IELTS. TOEFL and IELTS exams are considered valid for two (2) years from the date the exam was administered.
Academic Transcripts or WES ICAP Evaluation
Applicants must submit official transcripts for all registered coursework from each college or university attended. The SOPHAS Official Transcript Request Form must be included with each transcript. This documentation must be sent from the registrar or designated school records official directly to SOPHAS. Official transcripts will not be accepted from the applicant. Photocopies of official transcripts or unofficial records will not be accepted. International transcripts, including study abroad transcripts, may have additional requirements. International applicants should submit a WES ICAP evaluation.
If you are currently in a degree program, you are required to submit a current official transcript showing completed coursework and all work in progress. If you are accepted for admission, a final official transcript after degree conferral must be submitted directly to BUSPH prior to matriculation.
SPH reserves the right to reevaluate your application for admission upon receipt of the final official transcript.
Three (3) Letters of Recommendation
While only two letters of recommendation are needed for SOPHAS to submit your application to BUSPH for review, three letters of recommendation are required for an application to be considered complete. Recommenders should be able to evaluate academic or professional work, the ability to undertake graduate study, and potential as a public health professional. If possible, two of the letters of recommendation should come from faculty.
SOPHAS provides an electronic submission process for all letters of recommendation.
Statement of Purpose and Objectives
Applicants are required to submit a statement of purpose and objectives, intended to give applicants the opportunity to submit a narrative describing past education, experience, and current professional career objectives. Applicants must address the following three questions:
- What are your reasons for pursuing a Master of Public Health?
- Why do you wish to pursue your MPH at Boston University School of Public Health?
- How do you intend to leverage your MPH in a career of public health practice?
Though there is no set limit, most statements are 1–2 pages, single-spaced.
CV or Résumé
A current curriculum vitae or résumé is required. This document should be uploaded directly to the SOPHAS application.
Supplemental Application
Upon receipt of your application from SOPHAS, you will be provided with a link to complete our brief supplemental application. Though a credit card is required, there is no fee for this application.
