Biography

Dr. Bernstein is Emeritus Professor of Community Health Sciences at Boston University School of Public Health and Professor of Emergency Medicine at Chobanian and Avedisian School of Medicine. Dr. Bernstein has been a nurse and public health professional for the past 25 years. She has worked with both inner-city and rural communities to develop comprehensive integrated approaches to women's health. Dr. Bernstein holds an MSN in psychiatric nursing and a doctorate in health policy. She is certified in reproductive endocrinology and infertility, and in recognition of her critical role in the development of this nursing specialty, was the 1995 recipient of the prestigious NCC award. Dr. Bernstein's current research activities focus on prevention strategies for adults and adolescents that bring public health into the medical setting, including implementation of 'in-reach'--peer model interventions to bridge the cultural, language and knowledge gaps between patients and providers. Her current work includes analysis of the impact of substance abuse disorder on the health of women in Massachusetts aged 15-49 and their neonates. Dr. Bernstein was a member of the Committee on Ethics of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists for 15 years, and currently serves on a Data Safety and Management Board for the Clinical Trials Network at the National Institute on Drug Abuse at NIH. Dr. Bernstein represents the Community Health Sciences department on the BUSPH Research Committee.
