Pardee Center Launches Rising Powers Initiative
On February 8, 2021, The Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future, an affiliated center of the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, launched its new Rising Powers Initiative (RPI).
The mission of the RPI is to understand why rising powers flourish or fail in terms of security, governance, and health, and to understand the impact they have on the international orders of their time. RPI will conduct interdisciplinary and policy-relevant research on five emerging powers with increasing global impact: China, India, Brazil, the European Union/Germany, and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
“RPI is an utterly unique program and nothing like it exists either in the United States or internationally,” said Manjari Chatterjee Miller, RPI Director and Associate Professor of International Relations at the Pardee School. “Not only does it expand our conception of rising powers, but it also brings together both countries and issue areas that are typically studied in distinct silos. I’m really excited to develop and grow RPI with a wonderful group of people, not just our core faculty but also experts, from BU and beyond, conducting cutting edge research. My hope is we will become the go-to place to understand why and how these countries are shaping the global order.”
A number of Pardee School faculty are among the RPI core faculty and affiliates, including:
- Kevin Gallagher, Professor of Global Development Policy; RPI Core Faculty, Diplomacy & Governance.
- Ambassador Jorge Heine, Research Professor; RPI Core Faculty, Diplomacy & Governance.
- Mahesh Karra, Assistant Professor of Global Development Policy; RPI Core Faculty, Health & Human Capital.
- Kaija Schilde, Associate Professor of International Relations; RPI Expert Affiliate.
- Joshua Shifrinson, Assistant Professor of International Relations; RPI Core Faculty, Security & Cooperation.
