Beyond the Headlines: Digital Diplomacy

The Beyond the Headlines @BUPardeeSchool, or BtH, series at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University continued on February 26, 2020 with a panel discussion on digital diplomacy.

The discussion, entitled “The Next Phase in Digital Diplomacy: Choices & Challenges,” featured Corneliu Bjola, Associate Professor of Diplomatic Studies at the University of Oxford,  Amb. Paul Hare, Senior Lecturer at the Pardee School, and Amb. Jorge Heine, Research Professor at the Pardee School.

As the world becomes more digital and connected, the face of diplomacy itself has been undergoing rapid change, and the panel grappled with the direction as well as implication of this change. Speakers focused both on how the job of diplomats are changing but also on how diplomacy itself is undergoing change because of new technologies as well as much more rapid speeds of developments. The pansies were of the view that while more established ways of doing diplomacy remain vital and will remain so, new developments in the field cannot be ignored and have to be embraced as well as understood.
