Frequently Asked Questions
Who is eligible to apply?
Our Second Master’s degree program is open to students currently enrolled in a graduate level program at a MET International partner institution. Alumni who have graduated from a partner institution within five years of their intended Boston University master’s program start date are also eligible to apply. Students may commence the BU MET master’s degree either at the completion of or during the last semester of the home institution’s degree.
How is the program structured?

The Second Master’s degree program allows partner students to earn two master’s degrees in an abbreviated time frame at special tuition rates. Master’s degree programs at BU MET consist of either 8 or 10 courses. For degree programs that are 10 courses/40 credits, up to 2 courses/8 credits may be transferred in through the MET International Second Master’s program. Students who may be able to transfer courses from their home institution degree, would then complete 8 courses of the MET Mater’s degree program. For degree programs that are 8 courses, students complete all required MET courses to be awarded the MET Master’s degree.
What are the eligibility requirements?
Which BU MET master’s degrees are offered through this program?
Please contact your home institution to find out which options are currently available to you.
How long does this program take to complete?
The Second Master’s degree program can be completed in as little as two semesters. If students are looking to pursue an internship at the completion of the first semester as part of the program, then the total duration is extended to 3 semesters.
How is it determined whether any credits will be transferred from my current graduate program?
The number of credits transferred for an applicant is subject to the BU curricular review and is determined at the time of admission, taking into consideration the current academic department policy on transferring credits and the applicant’s grades in relevant courses at your home institution. Please note that a maximum of 2 courses/8 credits may be transferred in.
What degree of flexibility is allowed when choosing courses (e.g., required vs elective)?
Students may have some flexibility in the selection of their specialization courses, but they must fulfill the degree core requirements.
Can I take classes online?
Students enrolled in a program may be able to enroll in no more than 1 online course per semester with faculty advisement and approval.
How much does the program cost?
An overview of the estimated costs for the various degree pathways can be found
here. During their first semester of study, students from partner institutions are afforded a special tuition rate that represents close to 50% off the regular published tuition rate.
When can I begin my master’s degree?
Most Second Master’s program students may begin their program in either the fall or spring semester. Certain partner students have other arrangements allowing for alternate program start dates. Please consult with your home institution for more information.
Is there an option to do a professional internship?
Students enrolled in a master’s degree through the BU MET Administrative Sciences department have the option to do a professional internship. Those who wish to do so will be enrolled in an Advanced Graduate Certificate and complete a 4 credit internship course during their second semester of study. Please note that this option requires an additional semester of study to be added to their program and the internship must take place immediately after the first semester of study. Additional information about doing a professional internship can be found here.
Will I be able to apply for work authorization in the U.S. upon completion of my program?
Yes, you may be eligible to apply for optional practical training (OPT). OPT provides practical work experience and networking opportunities in your chosen field of study that can lead to long-term employment in the U.S. and potentially other parts of the world. If approved, you will receive authorization to work for up to 12 months in the United States.
What sort of career service and professional networking opportunities will I have access to as a program participant and alumni?
Every student who pursues a graduate degree at BU MET—including those in the Second Master’s program—has access to faculty advisement throughout the program, in addition to the University’s Center for Career Development, which provides workshops, networking opportunities, and one-on-one career advisement.
How can I learn about alumni experiences of this program?
We encourage all of our prospective students to view our
alumni profiles, in addition to following our social media, to learn about what it’s like to be a student in our degree programs.
Can I still apply if I’m a student from an institution that doesn’t have a current agreement with MET International? Do you allow free movers to apply?
