Rewards & Recognition
In Fall 2024, the Living Our Values Initiative was charged with identifying and defining a set of shared values through engagement with the Boston University community. In an October 2025 email, President Gilliam announced eight values that acknowledge our proud history, represent our community today, and serve in an aspirational capacity going into the future, helping to shape our community. You can learn more on the Our Values website.
These shared values can unite us and guide our decisions, behaviors, and actions in ways that foster inclusivity, integrity, and positive impact. As these values become central in our work and interactions, it is important to acknowledge the colleagues who exemplify them. Please note that we are no longer accepting nominations for the 2026 awards cycle.
Moving forward, Human Resources will seek nominations for the following awards every year:
- Collaboration, Leadership, Innovation, Communication and Knowledge (CLICK)
- The CLICK award celebrates those who consistently strengthen our campus community, advance our mission, and inspire others through their actions. By elevating everyday contributions that reflect the Living our Values Initiative, the CLICK award helps make those values a lived experience across the University. The recipient will receive a $1,500 award.
- Values in Action (VIA)
- This award will spotlight an individual whose leadership, actions, and value-driven work approach inspires others and contributes meaningfully to the University’s mission. This award celebrates leadership that drives transformation and fosters a stronger, more connected community, leaving a lasting impact. The recipient will receive a $2,500 award.

Additionally, Human Resources launched a third program, which centers around peer-to-peer recognition and is non-monetary. Thanks for Being You was created to make it possible for staff members to show appreciation for their colleagues by acknowledging their contributions in real time.
To participate, fill out a “Thanks for Being You” card at any time and email it to the colleague you wish to recognize. Be sure to copy applause@bu.edu so that your colleague can be considered for the “Peer Recognition Champions of the Year” award. More information is provided in the toolkit linked below.
As a reminder, the Staff Advisory Council also launched staff awards this spring; more information about the Spirit of BU Award and the BU Beacon Award is available on the SAC website.
Email applause@bu.edu if you have any questions or require any assistance.
