Virtual Events for Students and BUSSW Community
Make Connections and Learn Something New!
Community building is an important part of social work, and it’s an important part of our School’s MSW experience. That’s why we bring students from all programs together for First Thursdays, an event series that offers current students an opportunity to meet with peers, faculty, administrators, advisors, and alumni to make connections, while learning from content experts on a variety of topics.
First Thursdays are held on the first Thursday evening of each month via Zoom Web Conferencing.
Summer 2025 Event Schedule
August 7 2025
Event 1 | Social Work Licensing Exam Prep Workshop | 7:00-8:30 PM EST
This workshop will provide an overview of the ASWB licensing exam, which is required in many states for initial licensure. It will cover exam preparation resources, what to expect when taking the exam, and test-taking strategies. We will also review sample test questions to expose students to the types of questions asked.
Presented by Meg Matthews & Diane Zipoli, Online Programs Student Services Administrators, BUSSW

Event 2 | Building Your Global Social Work Toolkit: Skills That Travel | 8:30-9:30 PM EST
In this session, Dr. Beth Klein shares insights from her career spanning refugee resettlement, public education, and international mental health and education initiatives – from designing support systems for aid workers in France to developing and overseeing college counseling programs for refugee youth in Thailand. Now serving in BUSSW’s Online Program, Beth brings her commitment to student advocacy and educational equity into higher education.
Students will come away with practical tools for:
- Developing culturally responsive practices that can be adapted to diverse local and global contexts
- Identifying transferable social work skills that apply across domestic and international roles, including in sectors like humanitarian aid, education, and nonprofit leadership
- Understanding how international policy, funding trends, and global systems impact job opportunities and shape the landscape of global social work
This session encourages students to think expansively about their professional pathways and to craft narratives that position them as adaptable, globally minded practitioners ready to meet complex challenges – wherever they may arise.
Presented by Beth Kellenberg Klein, PhD, MSW, Director of Student Services for Online Programs, BUSSW
