Clarissa Valim, MD

Biography

Dr. Clarissa Valim received her MD from the University of the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1988 and her ScD in Immunology and Infectious Diseases (Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases) at the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH), in 2003. She also has an MSc in Public Health (Epidemiology) from the National School of Public Health / Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and an SM in Biostatistics from the HSPH. She worked as a Biostatistician in the Division of Clinical Research of Children’s Hospital and an Instructor in Surgery, Harvard Medical School until 2011, and then as a Research Scientist at the HSPH.
Clarissa’s research focuses on the epidemiology and immunology of malaria and malaria vaccine trials, novel biomarkers to detect microcephaly and other serious complications of the zika virus during pregnancy and inflammatory response patterns to determine the etiology of fever in young children. Her work on malaria takes her to Malawi, the work on Zika takes her to Brazil and the work on childhood fever and pneumonia takes her to the Gambia.
