The Activist Lab is proud to present the Gail Douglas Award, given annually to one of our valued public health practice partners who has contributed to the BUSPH community in one or more of the following categories:

Education

  • Shows dedication to training BUSPH students by establishing meaningful practicum projects and providing excellence in practicum supervisory support
  • Participates in practice-based teaching in BUSPH courses, providing a valuable link between the academic and practice arenas

Research

  • Collaborates with BUSPH faculty in the conduct of innovative practice-based public health research

Service

  • Is a leader in public health service, improving the lives of underserved individuals and communities

In June 2006, BU School of Public Health established an award for excellence in public health practice meant to acknowledge a member of the public health practice community for outstanding contributions to public health. The first recipient was Acting Dean of Practice Gail H. Douglas, an honor she received on the eve of her retirement.

Over the past several years, the Gail Douglas Award, which offers a $1000 prize, has been presented to remarkable public health professionals, including Letitia “Tish” Davis, founder of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health Occupational Surveillance Program; Robert Restuccia, executive director of Community Catalyst; Sarah Johnson of Management Sciences for Health; and Sophie Godley, then Deputy Director of the AIDS Action Committee, and Dr. Alfred DeMaria, Massachusetts State Epidemiologist.

  • 2006: Gail Douglas, Associate Dean, Boston University School of Public Health
  • 2007: Letitia “Tish” Davis, Founder and Director of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health Occupational Surveillance Program

  • 2009: Sarah Johnson, Management Sciences for Health

  • 2012: Winnie Suen, Geriatrician and palliative care physician at Boston Medical Center
  • 2013: Nicole Daley, Director, Start Strong Initiative, Division of Violence Prevention, Boston Public Health Commission
  • 2014-15: Staff of Bureau of Infectious Disease, Massachusetts Department of Public Health
  • 2016: Rachel Goodman and John Kane, Boston Housing Authority
  • 2017: Cheryl Sbarra, Senior Staff Attorney for the Mass. Association of Health Boards
