Registration in the Boston Area Consortia is a formal agreement between Boston University and several local colleges and universities whereby BU students can attend courses at other institutions, and students from other institutions can attend courses at BU. The primary schools in the Cross Registration consortium are Boston College, Brandeis University, Tufts University, and Hebrew College.
Students must obtain four authorization signatures to complete Cross Registration:
- Home Registrar’s signature to verify matriculation and good standing
- Advisor’s or dean’s signature to verify departmental authorization
- Course instructor’s signature
- Host Registrar’s signature
Fall Semester Registration
Cross registration applications for standard Fall 2024 semester courses will be accepted from August 19, 2024 through September 16, 2024.
BU Students
Policy
Both full-time and part-time degree candidates at BU are eligible to cross-register at Boston College, Brandeis University, Tufts University*, Hebrew College, and MIT.**
- Only matriculated students are eligible for Cross Registration.
- Students must maintain University Compliance.
- Students may cross-register for only one course per semester.
- Students simultaneously enrolled in a BU degree program and in a degree program at another school are not eligible for cross-registration through the Boston Area Consortia
- Cross Registration is not available during summer semesters.
- Students will be charged by BU.
- Full-time students who exceed 18 credits per semester will be charged at the standard part-time tuition rate.
- Part-time students will be charged the standard part-time tuition rate.
- Grades will be forwarded to BU by the host institution at the conclusion of the semester.
*Students may not register for classes at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University.
**Graduate students are eligible to apply to take courses through the Graduate Consortium in Women’s Studies at MIT.
BU students, while registered for a course at a consortium college or university, who find it necessary to withdraw from the University will follow the tuition refund schedule appropriate for their school or college at BU.
Procedure
- Obtain a Cross Registration Petition from the Office of the University Registrar (881 Commonwealth Avenue, Second Floor) or from the host institution.
- Your advisor or dean, the BU Registrar’s Office, and the host institution’s registrar’s office must sign the completed Cross Registration Petition.
- The copy of the signed Cross Registration Petition must be submitted to both the BU Registrar’s Office and the host institution’s registrar’s office for official registration.
SPH students wishing to cross register at another institution must obtain SPH registrar signature approval prior to registration. Contact the School of Public Health Registrar’s Office at sphregr@bu.edu or 617-358-3434.
Non-BU Students
Policy
Both full-time and part-time degree candidates are eligible to cross-register from Boston College, Brandeis University, Tufts University, Hebrew College, and MIT.*

- Students must have or obtain a BU identification card and a BU email address by their second class meeting.
- Students must maintain University Compliance.
- Students may cross-register for only one course per semester.
- Students may not register for LAW, MED-MD, SDM, PDP, EOP, or online courses.
- Cross Registration is not available during summer semesters.
- Students will be charged by their home institution.
- Grades will be forwarded from BU to the home institution at the conclusion of the semester.
*Students from MIT who are majoring in economics or political science may cross-register for African-American Studies only.
Procedure
- Obtain a Cross Registration Petition from your home institution or from the BU Registrar’s Office (881 Commonwealth Avenue, Second Floor).
- Your home school advisor or dean, and the BU course instructor, must sign the completed Cross Registration Petition.
- You must then submit the signed Cross Registration Petition to the BU Registrar’s Office for official registration.
- You must submit a copy of the petition to your home institution, as well.
Students wishing to cross-register for a course in the School of Public Health (SPH) must contact an SPH representative for registration approval. Contact the School of Public Health Registrar’s Office at sphregr@bu.edu or 617-358-3434.
Students registering with the School of Theology or the Graduate Program in Religion through the Boston Theological Interreligious Consortium must apply through the BTI Portal.
