In order to prepare for graduation, graduate students should be sure to complete each step in the graduation process in a timely manner, as outlined in the sections below.
Begin the Graduation Process
Graduation is NOT automatic. In order to graduate, you must:
- The semester before you intend to complete your degree requirements, complete a Graduation Application (no fee involved) as indicated by your graduate department or program office.
- Successfully complete all academic requirements. You will officially graduate only when all degree requirements are met. You may participate (“walk”) in the May commencement ceremonies if you plan to complete all academic requirements by August.
Once your Graduation Application has been approved, you will receive notification via email. This information will include the times and locations of the University and College ceremonies, plus links to this website and the University-wide website where you can find further details concerning the events and necessary preparations. You will receive these communications only after you have applied and been approved for graduation.
Prepare for the Commencement Ceremonies
When you have received your graduation information, take the following steps to prepare for Commencement ceremonies:
- Update diploma and graduation information on the MyBU Student Portal (be sure to update this information even if you do not plan to attend Commencement ceremonies).
- Order your cap and gown. Everyone who participates in an academic ceremony on Commencement Weekend is required to wear a cap and gown as approved by the University. Academic dress is available via Herff Jones and Barnes & Noble at Boston University.
Attend Commencement Ceremonies
- You may attend the MET Convocation Ceremony at Agganis Arena (Saturday, May 16, 2026, 4 pm), as well as the University-wide Commencement Ceremony at Nickerson Field (Sunday, May 17, 2026, 1 pm).
- All diplomas will be mailed to May graduates beginning in June 2026. Remember to check your final transcript (you may review it in your MyBU Student portal) and diploma to verify the correct spelling of your name, proper degree, major, and date.
- Tickets are not required for the Metropolitan Convocation Ceremony. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis, and there will be plenty of seating. Invite as many guests as you’d like. Since there is plenty of seating, guests should not feel that they have to arrive early. There will be signs to direct guests to the proper areas.
- Tickets are required for the All-University Commencement Ceremony. Each graduate wishing to attend the All-University ceremony will have to register for themselves and will then be allotted up to 4 tickets per graduate for their guests. The graduates will be responsible for “delivering” these electronic tickets to their guests. There will also be a mechanism in place for graduates who may need more than 4 tickets. Please continue to check the BU Commencement website for more information, including FAQs and troubleshooting with the ticketing.
