Megan McClung Memorial Scholarship Fund
The Boston University Metropolitan College Department of Applied Social Sciences and the Metropolitan College Alumni office are pleased to announce the Major Megan McClung Memorial Scholarship fund. The fund provides annual scholarships based on academic performance to Metropolitan College students who are pursuing the online Master of Science in Criminal Justice degree program. Students may receive the Megan McClung scholarship only once.
In Honor of Major McClung
Major Megan M. McClung completed her online master’s degree program in Criminal Justice in September of 2006. Most of the work she did on her degree was done in a war zone.
Megan grew up in a Marine Corps family in Mission Viejo, California, and received her officer’s commission from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1995. She left active duty in 2004 and went to Iraq as a private contractor for Kellogg Brown & Root, a Halliburton subsidiary. In 2006, Megan returned to Iraq as a Marine.
Major McClung died December 6, 2006, while supporting combat operations in Al Anbar province, Iraq. McClung was assigned to the Marine Expeditionary Force Headquarters Group, Camp Pendleton, California.
Megan’s private life included an ardent love of her country, her family, and athletics. By the age of 34, she’d already completed numerous marathons and six ironman competitions. Megan’s abundant spirit and competitive nature made her a sharp-witted risk-taker, and an excellent Marine. She is also remembered as a terrific daughter, sister, friend, and student.
In May of 2007, as Megan’s parents Re and Mike attended what would have been her graduation ceremony in Boston, Metropolitan College announced a scholarship fund in Megan’s name and memory. The scholarship supports students in the online Criminal Justice program and is awarded annually to students who exemplify Megan’s own academic excellence, strong citizenship and character, and a desire to make a meaningful contribution to society.
