BU School of Hospitality Announces New Concentration in Restaurant Management & Experiences

RESTAURANT MANAGEMENT & EXPERIENCES CONCENTRATION—MASTER OF MANAGEMENT IN HOSPITALITY

(March 22,  2021) Boston, MA – Boston University’s School of Hospitality Administration (BU SHA) Dean Arun Upneja, Ph.D., and Associate Professor of the Practice Leora Halpern Lanz, ISHC,  Faculty Chair of the School’s Master of Management in Hospitality (MMH) degree program, have announced the launch of a new concentration: Restaurant Management & Experiences.

Complementing existing concentrations in Innovation & Entrepreneurship, Revenue Management & Analytics, Real Estate & Finance, Digital Marketing, and the recently-announced Business of Senior Living, this set of courses establish SHA’s commitment to preparing students for a new world of hospitality. The degree’s newest course in innovation & Disruption is also a testament to the program’s forward-thinking and innovative approach to the study of hospitality.

“The MMH concentration in Restaurant Management & Experiences provides students the opportunity to think entrepreneurially, innovatively and sagaciously,” states Dean Upneja.  Courses in this new concentration include Future of the Restaurant Business and Advanced Food & Beverage Operations and Experiences.  Optional courses are also available in Hospitality Entrepreneurship, and through the Boston University Questrom School of Business (Design Thinking), and Boston University’s Metropolitan College (Food Marketing).

“Some of these courses in our School of Hospitality Administration (SHA) will be taught by experienced restaurateurs and entrepreneurs who are our own SHA alumni. We are extremely proud of that too,” adds Dean Upneja.

“The restaurant world has been impacted tremendously this past year and we have seen some of our favorite establishments disappear as new ones emerge,” explains Lanz. “Restaurants have maneuvered and concepts such as grab-and-go, virtual kitchens, ghost kitchens, and QR code menus have become normalized. What’s next? That’s what we will also address in these classes.”

“There are so many enthusiastic and ambitious people who are eagerly trying to break into this business, as well as more experienced and seasoned food and service operators who want fresh thinking and new ideas,” adds Lanz. “This collection of courses is geared to cater to both cohorts, among others.”

The new concentration launches Fall 2021. Applications are now available online. For more information or to learn more about the Restaurant Management & Experiences concentration, visit www.bu.edu/hospitality/academics/mmh/.
