Please join us in congratulating the faculty who received an Award for Excellence in Teaching for the Fall 2015 semester. Recipients are selected by the Education Committee, which is comprised of faculty from each department. The selection is based on a review of the overall course evaluations, including instructor ratings and student comments.

The award winners are listed below, together with representative quotes from students about their courses. Congratulations to all the award winners!

Recipients of the Fall 2015 Awards

BS704: Introduction to Biostatistics

Jacqui Milton
“Jacqui was impeccably organized, unruffled by all questions, had good humor/attitude about students’ needs, always willing to provide help when asked for, very professional but still entertaining. Did not expect to like this class so much, but she made it enjoyable.”

BS723: Introduction to Statistical Computing
danielle_enserro

Danielle preis, Sarah Preis
“I struggled with SAS at the beginning of the semester, but Danielle and Sarah were so encouraging and patient with me. They really helped me get my SAS foundations down and were always available to help.”

BS852: Statistical Methods in Epidemiology

Timothy HeerenTim Heeren
“Professor Heeren was infectious in terms of his enthusiasm and zeal towards the subject matter. This certainly helped me keep interested and committed to learning new materials especially post-midterm. The homeworks complemented the learning from class, with addition of some discussions relating to the homework prior to covering new material in class.”

EH710: Physiologic Principles for Public Healthwolff

Jean van Seventer
“Jean is clearly knowledgeable and passionate about the subject. Her intimate understanding of these systems and their integration is impressive and she easily transfers this knowledge to students through well-organized, interesting lectures. She meet us on weekends to review for module exams and always encouraged students to ask questions or meet with her outside of class if they were having difficulty.”

EP751: Cardiovascular Epidemiology

Vasan_HeadshotVasan Ramachandran and Vanessa Xanthakis
“I like the public health intervention we had to work on at the end of the semester. The work was fun and it was really interesting to hear the ideas of the other students. The best part of the course is the non-stressful environment that encouraged questions.”

GH743: Implementing Health Programs in Developing Countries: Making Programs Work

Malcolm Bryantjwolff.jpgMalcolm Bryant, James Wolff
“These instructors go well beyond just lecturing about the subject matter and force students to really gain an appreciation for the real-world applicability of each topic. I really liked the audio-feedback, rather than written comments, which made the critique more personable, easier to understand, and entertaining!!”

GH811: Applied Research Methods in Global Health

Andrew StokesAndrew Stokes
“Andrew created an atmosphere in the classroom where I was comfortable asking questions, contributing my ideas, and learning coding with my own pace. Very patient instructor who actually listens to what you have to say.”

GH887: Planning and Managing MCH Programs in Developing Countries

jwolff.jpgJames Wolff, Rachel Bonawitz
“The class was very informative with the course components from the training workshops and the proposal writing. I felt like the components were incredibly valuable lessons for future public health careers.”

LW719: Essentials of Public Health Law

Lynn Squillace
“Prof. Squillace is by far one of my favorite professors at BUSPH. I appreciated her no nonsense teaching style. She referred me to tutoring early in the semester, no questions asked. I started the semester dreading health law, based on feedback from other students. I ended up really enjoying the class and will actually miss it.”

MC775: Research and Action for Eliminating Health Inequities

Candace BelanoffCandice Belanoff
“This class was amazing and should be a core class. Everyone needs to take this. Belanoff is fantastic. The readings were well thought out and curated. The guest speakers were fabulous. The class discussion was amazing. I cannot praise this class enough. Thank you, thank you, thank you.”

MC840: Women and Health Policy: Gender, Evidence, and Politics

Judith BernsteinJudith Bernstein
“Professor Bernstein has a great skill and making sure all of us think of tackling public health problems with an open mind. I honestly can say that I ended the course with a much greater understanding of my personal biases as well as the need for patience and understanding. She made the class a joy to attend.”

PH510: Introduction to Public Health

Cassie Ryan
“Really enjoyed class and was always really helpful. I was never bored and was always prompted to think- the class was challenging, but in a way that furthered learning.”

PM827: Strategic Management of Health Care Organizations

Gouri GupteGouri Gupte
“Professor Gupte is not your typical professor. She creates positive chaos in class to engage the students and she does a fabulous job at it. She has reformed the conventional method of teaching and constantly drew from current events to discuss theories, concepts, and strategy. Gouri is my favorite teacher in the universe.”
