The Society for Social Work and Research (SSWR) has elected Prof. Hyeouk Chris Hahm from BU School of Social Work (BUSSW) as their new vice president. As a non‐profit professional organization, SSWR supports researchers, faculty, professionals, and students in social work and related fields.

“I am profoundly grateful for this opportunity,” says Hahm. “SSWR has provided me with a vehicle to learn and grow as a researcher and scholar, and I am honored to help continue their mission to ensure that impactful social work research advances social justice and equity.”

The role includes a one-year term chairing the conference program planning committee that plans SSWR’s annual conference program. Hahm says that “Implementing funding for junior scholars to attend the conference will enhance research dissemination across the social work community, funders, and policy makers.” In addition, she hopes to “further existing supports at the annual conference to promote research conducted by BIPOC and first-generation scholars.”

As the associate dean of research at BUSSW, Prof. Hahm is an internationally renowned expert in AAPI (Asian American and Pacific Islander) mental health. Her culturally grounded intervention AWARE (Asian American Women’s Actions in Resilience and Empowerment) helps social work providers treat and prevent mental health problems among Asian American women.
