Faculty members and doctoral students in the BUSPH Department of Epidemiology will play important roles in two major meetings of the Society for Epidemiologic Research (SER) and the Society for Pediatric and Perinatal Epidemiologic Research (SPER).

BUSPH Epidemiology Department Chair Bob Horsburgh will welcome SER members to Boston at the meeting’s opening session on Wednesday, June 19. During the three-day SER Meeting, Department of Epidemiology faculty members will participate in panel discussions, present research and chair symposia, expert sessions and roundtable discussions.

On June 19, Professor Martha Werler will participate in a panel discussion on “Training Epidemiologists: Looking to the Future” and Assistant Professor Jamie Gradus will co-chair a symposium on “Methodologic Issues in Psychiatric Epidemiology.” Professor Elizabeth Hatch and Associate Professor Lauren Wise will be presenting in a session entitled “Prenatal Exposures and Outcomes over the Life Course.”

Assistant Professor Yvette Cozier will host a “Breakfast with the Experts” session and Professor Ann Aschengrau will chair a roundtable discussion on “Strengths and Weaknesses of GIS Exposure Assessment in Environmental Epidemiology,” while Professor Julie Palmer will chair a roundtable discussion on “Methodological Challenges in Racial/Ethnic Disparities Research.”

On June 20, Wise will chair a program session on “Female Infertility: Causes and Consequences” and will join Professor Kenneth Rothman in hosting “Breakfast with the Experts” sessions. On June 21, Associate Professor Dan Brooks will present in a symposium on “Teaching Introductory Epidemiology.”

Over the course of the meeting, oral and poster presentations will be given by BUSPH epidemiology doctoral students Jeff Ashburner, Kathy Bacon, Dhayana Dallmeier, Jennifer Fonda, Jennifer Lyons, and Sarah Stone.

This year’s SPER meeting on June 17-18 will mark the start of Professor Martha Werler’s term as the society’s president. In addition, poster presentations will be given by Wise, epidemiology doctoral students Kelly Getz, Sam Parker and Mahsa Yazdy, and master’s student Corey Benedum. The BUSPH Department of Epidemiology will also host a reception on Wednesday, June 19 for current and former students and faculty.
