CSE Hosts Lecture with Ukrainian-Based Terrell Jermaine Starr

On March 29, 2022, the Center for the Study of Europe (CSE), an affiliated center of the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, hosted a lecture featuring independent journalist Terrell Jermaine Starr, who is reporting from Kyiv, Ukraine.
Terrell Jermaine Starr is the founder and host of the Black Diplomats Podcast and a nonresident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council’s Eurasia Center. CSE’s dialogue was moderated by Deborah D. Douglas, Editor-in-chief of The Emancipator.
During the event, Starr described his experience living in and reporting from Ukraine, surrounded by soldiers, bombings, and fleeing civilians. His major observance was on race and how that has played into his own experience as well as acts of discrimination he’s witnessed. Starr expanded upon reports that black and brown evacuees are being discriminated against, which he said was shocking but not surprising given that racism was already prevalent in Ukraine and has been exacerbated by the war with Russia. He went on to describe the treatment of ethnic and racial minorities in Ukraine and Russia, the vast humanity in Ukraine and the diverse racial experiences in the country, as well as how identity has played into the Russia-Ukraine war.
