Hare Comments on Protests in Cuba And Government Response

Ambassador Paul Hare, Senior Lecturer in International Relations at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, was quoted in a Reuters article discussing the upcoming “Civic March for Change” in Cuba planned for November 15, 2021.

The article, titled “Ahead of planned protests, Cuban government and dissidents wage ‘battle of ideas’,” explores the upcoming protests – led by a younger, more internet savvy youth – as well as the Cuban government’s strategy to defame the protest through media campaigns and spycraft. Hare noted that the government is clearly reverting to Cold War-era strategies against protest movements claiming, “they’ve lost the narrative, the battle of ideas, especially with young people.” The article goes on to state how the government is deploying every strategy it can to reel in the protesters, even blaming the United States for meddling in the country’s affairs.
