Schmidt Comments on Challenges Facing EU

Vivien SchmidtJean Monnet Professor of European Integration and Professor of International Relations and Political Science at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, appeared in an International Institute of Peace (IIP) video commenting on challenges facing the European Union (EU). 

In the context of the Conference on The Future of Europe, planned for the next two years, the IIP asked experts would to take a deeper look on the main challenges, domestically and internationally, for the EU in the next four years. In her remarks, Schmidt notes that an issue facing the EU is Eurozone Crisis governance, how this lack of governance during the crisis gave rise to populist political parties, and how the COVID-19 pandemic has reversed the economic of austerity in the region.

Vivien Schmidt is Professor of International Relations and Jean Monnet Professor of European Integration at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies and was the first Director of BU’s Center for the Study of Europe, housed at the Pardee School. Schmidt’s research focuses on European political economy, institutions, democracy, and political theory—in particular on the importance of ideas and discourse in political analysis.
