Schmidt Discusses Europe’s Crisis of Legitimacy with EPRS

On March 15, 2021, Vivien SchmidtJean Monnet Professor of European Integration and Professor of International Relations and Political Science at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, delivered a lecture on her latest book – European’s Crisis of Legitimacy: Governing by Rules and Ruling by Numbers in the Eurozone – for the European Parliamentary Research Service (EPRS).

The lecture was moderated by Anthony Teasdale, head of the European Parliamentary Research Service, and featured Jim Cloos, former Director-General for General and Institutional Policy, as a discussant. Schmidt discussed why she wrote her new book, set out its main arguments, reflected on its implications for the current coronavirus crisis, and answered questions from the audience.

Vivien Schmidt is Professor of International Relations and Jean Monnet Professor of European Integration at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies and was the first Director of BU’s Center for the Study of Europe, housed at the Pardee School. Schmidt’s research focuses on European political economy, institutions, democracy, and political theory—in particular on the importance of ideas and discourse in political analysis.
