Technology Services

Who doesn’t love free stuff? One of the many benefits of campus living is the no-charge, built-in services in our residences, from cable TV to Ethernet to Wi-Fi. Below is an overview of some tech amenities that come with your room and board.

Wireless Network
The University’s IS&T group maintains an extensive wireless network throughout the Charles River, Fenway, and Medical Campuses, and certain other remote campuses as well. We design and install all wireless infrastructure, ensuring members of the BU community secure and easy access to the network at data rates up to 200 Mbps.

Centralizing design, installation, management, and maintenance means the wireless network functions in a predictable and reliable manner, providing simplicity, consistency, transparency, and security for everyone, regardless of where they connect to our network.

Ethernet/ResNet
In addition to our Wi-Fi network, all on-campus rooms are wired to give students individual Ethernet connections to the campus network.

With dedicated, high-speed Ethernet ports available to every occupant in over 150 residences, ResNet at Boston University is among the most capable residential networks anywhere, offering students broadband access to a vast array of computing, communications, and information resources on campus, throughout the US, and around the world.

Cable TV
All student residences managed by BU Housing include BUTV and IPTV, without charge. The cable TV system offers a comprehensive lineup of over 100 channels and programming customized for our campus. IPTV offers live streaming high definition channels. Choose from entertainment, movies, sports, news, and many international stations. (Xfinity Stream App Not Available on 2017 Samsung and LG Smart TVs)

How to get up and running
Students in on-campus undergraduate residences: simply connect your TV to the cable outlet using an RG-6 coaxial cable. Make sure that you have set your TV for cable or CATV (vs antenna) and performed an auto program (sometimes called channel setup). If you find that your BUTV is still not working, please submit a repair ticket.

Telephones
Resident students have the option to install individual telephone lines in their rooms. Telephone sets, however, are not provided.

Students are responsible for arranging with Verizon (888-339-7306) for service and, if applicable, for the disconnection of their academic-year telephone service at the end of their term.
