Non-BU Study Abroad Programs

Going away on a non-BU program for the fall semester

If you are assigned to University housing on the Charles River Campus for the upcoming academic year and plan to go on a non-BU study abroad or internship program for the fall semester, you must contact the University Service Center to take a leave of absence from the University prior to the first day of classes for the fall. In addition, you must notify Boston University Housing, 25 Buick Street, Boston, MA 02215, in writing, of your intent to cancel your Residence License Agreement and housing assignment. If you submitted a housing guarantee payment, it will be rebated or forfeited in accordance with the schedule outlined in the Terms and Conditions of the Residence License Agreement.

Going away on a non-BU program for the spring semester

If you reside in University housing on the Charles River Campus for the fall semester and plan to participate in a non-BU study abroad or internship program during the spring semester, in addition to taking a leave of absence from the University prior to the first day of classes for the spring, you must also officially move out of your on-campus residence by completing the following checkout procedures prior to the end of the fall semester (by noon on the morning after the last day of exams for the fall semester). Housing charges assessed to your account for the spring semester will remain valid until you take a leave of absence and complete these housing checkout procedures.

Housing checkout procedures to be completed in addition to taking a leave of absence:

  • Complete a checkout room condition report, have it signed by a member of the residence staff, return it to your residence office, and keep a copy for your records;
  • Remove all of your belongings from your residence;
  • Leave your residence in clean, habitable condition;
  • Complete a mail forwarding/change-of-address card;
  • Return your residence keys in person to your residence office. Do this yourself; do not give your keys to anyone else to return for you.

When you take a leave of absence and withdraw from the University residential system (for whatever reason), you are no longer guaranteed an on-campus accommodation for the current or any subsequent semester or academic year. If you wish to return to on-campus housing after taking a leave of absence, you must apply and submit a request to do so, in writing, to Boston University Housing (at 25 Buick Street, Boston, MA 02215) or via e-mail to housing@bu.edu. If you feel your application should be given special consideration, you should state the reasons as a part of your application. The Housing Committee will notify you, via mail to the home address you have on file with the University, of the decision made on your application. If you would like the Housing Committee to send notice of its decision to another address, please provide that address in your application. Again, please note there is no guarantee that your application will be approved. If you are not offered an on-campus accommodation, you must reapply to be considered for subsequent semesters.
