Frozen February
Well folks, it's been so cold, I've had absolute brainfreeze and forgot to publish anything sooner! January's return to campus brought us some record snowfall and chilling temps, as well as frustrating, unplowed bike lanes and sloppy narrow roadways and sidewalks.
Despite the mercury, we've been getting out there! We're seeing plenty of friends coming in to keep their tires inflated, and chains cleaned and lubricated. If you're out there and haven't done so yet, come on by, we'll be thrilled to see you. Especially since it's much easier to get to the BUCK since last week!!
Huge thanks to the Urbanism Club, Boston Cafe Bikers, Boston Cyclist Union, and friends for helping clear the protected lanes on Comm adjacent to BUCK and spurring the clearance of most the protected bike lanes! It was great to see BUCK stickers at the Alex Pretti Unity Ride on Jan 31, even in those freezing temps, y'all showed up with riders around the country and around the world. Then, Saturday the 7th, in swirling snow, you were back at it with us, and with our friends CommonWheels, to take a peek at brand new bicycling infrastructure installed in Boston and Cambridge during 2026. Everyone demonstrated excellent handling in the blowy, slushy conditions, and it was an excellent reminder to all of us just how important protected, separated facilities are to our comfort on the road. And big ups to the plows we saw out there, keeping our lanes clear.

For faculty and staff, if you've submitted your eligibility for bike benefits, we're now accepting receipts. Thanks for your patience as things were a bit bumpy this year. You have until March 31st to submit your paperwork.
And we've got a few more events lined up for February:
The Events:

Holiday Dreamin’
Another semester has passed so quickly! Before finals sneak up on you, and everyone heads home for break, there's just a few quick notes. Due to some staffing changes, starting in December, BUCK will go back to closing at 2pm Thursdays. We will remain open on Saturdays for the time being, though project scope will be limited to what our all student crew feel like they can handle! They reserve the right to ask you to return with your complicated project during a different time. Thanks for respecting their boundaries.
Have you registered your bike yet? If not, now is the time. Why? Because the best thing you can do for your bike when you head home for the holidays is to park inside. Warren Towers, Stuvi 1, Howard Thurman, and Fenway Campus (Peabody and Pilgrim) bike rooms all have plenty of space. Protect your bike from the weather, rogue plows, and opportunistic disappearances. The BUCK closes for break at 7pm on Friday 12/19, so come see us quick to take advantage!
For faculty, staff and grad students: It's time to apply for bike benefits! Follow the link to read our FAQ and find out if you qualify. Haven't maxed out your spending? There's still time to squeeze in a few more accessories for the year, and now's the time when having extra lights or a new pair of fenders could really go a long way. And to celebrate your choosing to commute by bike, we'll be having a little party next week! More details after the jump.
The Events:
12/2 Tuesday 4:00- 6:00 PM
BUCK x Transfer Student Office Craft Night
Cookies, cocoa, crafts, community.... maybe even cartoons?
12/5 Friday 4:00 PM
Movie Night!
Don't ever let go! Take a break from last minute projects and studying and watch Titanic with us.
12/6 Saturday 10:00 AM
Babes Bike Bakeries Start at BUCK, Finish at Flour, Harvard Sq location
Join BUCK x Femmechanics for a festive, party pace, 15 mi ride with other FTWNB bikers. Ugly sweaters may be optional, but enough layers to remain comfy through the ride are imperative. We'll be biking to all the Flour Bakery locations throughout the city to participate in their annual Holiday Window Challenge. Expect a brief stop at each location for group selfies, with two longer stops for snacks. We'll compile the selfies and share on Instagram. Reshare the collage to receive a box of pastries from Flour in January.
12/9 Tuesday 4:00- 6:00 PM
Employee Commuter Benefit Party
If you get to BU by bike, even a little, come hang with your fellow bicycle commuters! Join us at the BUCK for an afternoon of drinks, snacks, socializing and maybe prizes?

Daylight Fading
Yesterday campus was filling up with eager new and returning students, and now, in a blink, midterms! If you're starting to feel a little crispy around the edges, now is a great time to take a study break and give your bike some TLC before heading home for the holiday. Sometimes the weather turns suddenly and it might be a while before you ride again, so at the very least, pumping your tires, oiling your chain, and parking your (registered) bike in the closest bike room will go a long way to being ride ready again in the spring. Where to park inside? 10 Buick St and Warren Towers bike rooms both have lots of space!
Speaking of protecting yourself from the weather, now that there are as many leaves on the ground as on the trees, its a good time to remember that wet leaves are slippery! Puddles, wet leaves, train tracks and other wet metal in the pavement are all hazards to be avoided and steered around. Aside from puddles, treat all the above hazards as if they are ice- no abrupt stops or turns, to keep yourself upright. How else can you keep yourself dry, you might ask? Well, read on!
