Diploma & Graduation FAQS

When and How will I receive my diploma?

This information applies to  January, May, & August graduations

  • Diplomas are not handed out at commencement
  • Diplomas are mailed automatically after:

    • Your graduation is officially confirmed
    • You have no university holds
    • You’ve submitted your diploma name, mailing address, and phone number in MyBU (see “Updating Diploma Info” below.
  • You’ll receive an email with tracking once shipped by our diploma vendor. It can take up to 8 weeks for diplomas to be produced, depending on the volume of our vendor. There is no rush option.
  • Diplomas are ordered automatically for 6 weeks after graduation. For more details please refer to the Diploma Order/Mailing Schedule.

What if I’m moving after graduation?

Diplomas are mailed to the diploma mailing address we have on file at the date of graduation. As it can take up to 8 weeks to produce the diploma for shipping, you should update your address in MyBU to your future address. For example, you should not enter your dorm address, you should enter the address you will be living at after graduation.

You can change your address up until the graduation date. After that, changes can’t be made, and you may need to reorder a replacement diploma if it’s undeliverable.

But I need my diploma by a certain date, can you expediate this process?

While we are unable to accelerate diploma production, we do offer many ways to verify you degree:

Transcript – If you like, you could order your official e-transcript (this will include your conferral date) by creating a Parchment account and placing an electronic transcript order: https://www.bu.edu/reg/academics/transcripts/ . Please download your unofficial transcript beforehand, so you can verify your graduation date has been applied.

Degree Certification – You can request your official Degree Certification (PDF) by emailing registrar@bu.edu. Although this doesn’t take the traditional diploma format, it is certified and official proof of degree attainment that employers/agencies should accept

Clearinghouse –  We do suggest employers/agencies go through the National Student Clearinghouse for degree verifications. This is a more dependable way to confirm degree awards as opposed to circulating diplomas or verification letters: https://secure.studentclearinghouse.org/vs/Index . Please note that it takes 5 business days after graduation before your information is available.

What is a CeCredential and how do I get one ?

  • A digital, certified version of your diploma
  • Students will receive an email notification, via the BU email address, that the CeCredential is available.
  • A CeCredential costs $11 and is available for degrees granted as of January 25, 2020.

For information regarding CeCredentials, please review our site, here: CeCredential Info

How do I update my diploma info?

Can I update my name, address, or phone number for the diploma?

Yes—until graduation day. Log into the MyBU Student Portal

Navigate to MyBU > My Profile > Contact Info > Diploma Mailing Address to Add/Update your:

  • Mailing address

Diploma addresses must be entered in the following format:

Please use alpha/numeric characters only.

The format may slightly differ from country to country, but please only enter the information requested in that specific field. You should update your address in MyBU to your future address. For example, you should not enter your dorm address, you should enter the address you will be living at after graduation.

Does my diploma shipment come with tracking?

If your diploma has been mailed during our mailing schedule you will receive an email from our diploma vendor with USPS tracking information once your diploma has shipped.

If your diploma has been withheld and mailed from our office it will be sent via USPS with no tracking option.

I resolved my account hold, when can I expect to receive my diploma?

If you resolve your account hold during the diploma mailing schedule, your diploma will be ordered for the upcoming order date and mailed on the corresponding date.  If you resolve your account hold after the final date of  mailing schedule, you will need to contact diploma@bu.edu for assistance. After the final mailing date, we do not receive automatic notifications when students resolve holds, so it is your responsibility to contact the diploma office regarding the release of your diploma. Please be advised it can take up to 5 days for account holds to be lifted.

Did I receive honors?

Honors are awarded by GPA rank within each school:

  • Summa Cum Laude – Top 5%
  • Magna Cum Laude – Top 10%
  • Cum Laude – Top 15%

GPA “cutoffs” are determined annually and include your final semester grades.
