Academic scheduling is a complex process involving many units on campus. Decision-making begins within academic units. Each unit is represented by an academic scheduler, who works with faculty and administration to determine course offerings each semester. This involves answering questions including which classes will be offered, in how many sections, and at what times. Academic schedulers compile these details, and enter them into UIS, Boston University’s student information system. Classroom assignments are made in 25 Live, a vended scheduling software which functions in tandem with UIS. Academic schedulers assign all proprietary (department-owned) spaces such as labs, while the Schedule’s Department of the Office of the University Registrar assigns all remaining courses to general purpose classrooms. Assignments made in 25 Live are communicated back to UIS, and ultimately the Link – where students and faculty may view the academic schedule.
