Tina Durand is a clinical associate professor of counseling psychology and applied human development at Wheelock College of Education & Human Development. She pushes her students—future teachers, counselors, and researchers—to challenge their perspectives and beliefs, and to think deeply about the barriers encountered by different communities and what it means to grow and learn in today’s complex world.

Her thoughtful approach is especially successful because Professor Durand is an extremely intentional and caring professor with a passion for social justice.

One student put it simply: “Tina is amazing.” Another remarked, “This course not only enriched my education, but my life. I’ve learned more about myself, my peers, and beyond . . . . Professor Durand was so passionate and knowledgeable about the content presented in this course. She made my learning experience so much better.”

Professor Durand remains committed to her students beyond their time at BU, regularly mentoring those who’ve completed her courses to help prepare them for leadership in their professional and scholarly careers. Whether helping navigate rigorous publication review processes, prepare for national conference presentations, or secure prestigious job and fellowship opportunities, her willingness to go the extra mile has been recognized with numerous teaching awards and the respect of colleagues and peers.

Professor Durand “seamlessly connects research with teaching, teaches and mentors her students with care and deep respect, and embodies equitable processes in her teaching practice,” added her department chair. “In short, she practices what she teaches in her class.”
