A Pardee Alum’s Mission for Global Economic Equality

When Faina Rozental (CAS ’11, GRS ’11, Pardee ’11) began her journey at Boston University, the Pardee School was in its early stages; back then, “it was an international relations program.” Nevertheless, she had no idea how profoundly this academic experience would shape her life. “I didn’t understand how great it was going to be,” she reflects. Like many students, she was initially unsure. But what began with uncertainty transformed into a defining chapter of her life, one marked by eye-opening opportunities, meaningful mentorship, and friendships that endure to this day.

Rozental’s family immigrated to the United States in the 1990s after the fall of the Soviet Union. This experience gave her a unique perspective on economic development and motivated her to pursue a career that could address economic inequality and provide opportunities for growth, particularly in communities affected by poverty. “I really wanted to do something with my life that would create economic opportunity for people all over the world,” she explains.

Faina credits a pivotal conversation with her advisor at Pardee that guided her career decisions. “I told him I wanted to work in economic development. He asked if I’d heard of Root Capital.” She hadn’t, but her advisor’s suggestion proved life-changing. “I looked into it, and it became my dream job. I was a sophomore at BU when I decided I had to work there one day.” After graduating, it took some time and determination, but Rozental eventually joined Root Capital. The organization focuses on providing loans to agricultural businesses in Latin America and Africa—businesses that larger banks might deem too risky. “That was foundational to who I am and the kind of career I want to build,” Rozental adds.

Beyond her advisor’s guidance, the university’s study abroad opportunities were transformative. Rozental spent her junior year in Ecuador and Spain, immersing herself in local cultures and economics. “It was so eye-opening, and that was the theme of BU—opening up my eyes to all the possibilities,” she recalls. Studying abroad deepened her global perspective and forged lifelong friendships: “I just got married, and a bunch of my study-abroad friends were at the wedding.” Without a doubt, studying abroad was more than just a year of fun; “it was one of the highlights of college,” says Rozental.

She also worked at the Study Abroad Office, where she saw firsthand the benefits of studying in a foreign country. She says, “I’m the biggest advocate of studying abroad. BU has phenomenal programs. It’s game-changing to live with a host family, immerse yourself, and gain that global perspective.”

Pardee’s global approach to education encouraged Faina to step beyond her comfort zone and pursue professional experiences that aligned with her values. While at BU, she attended a talk by Kathleen, an OECD speaker. Rozental introduced herself and expressed her interest in collaborating, a connection that ultimately led to her first postgraduate job. As she reflects, “It comes down to the people you meet. BU just opens up so many possibilities if you’re ready to take advantage of them.”

After nearly four years at Root Capital, Faina transitioned to Eventide Asset Management, a values-based investment firm in Boston that prioritizes companies adding value to society. “Where Root Capital was about impact investing in agricultural businesses, Eventide focuses on publicly traded companies that treat employees well, protect the environment, and serve communities. It’s a different scale, but the mission resonates with me deeply.” Faina’s career has consistently reflected her commitment to creating meaningful, sustainable impact.

Throughout her career, Faina continues to advocate for the power of education and mentorship. Her time at Pardee shaped her academic development and laid the foundation for the professional she would become. Rozental’s advice to current students? Balance building core skills with embracing new experiences. “If you’re interested in a career in economics or finance, don’t underestimate the importance of analytical and statistical skills. But also, study abroad—immerse yourself and get a global perspective. It’ll change your life.”

From the encouragement of a trusted advisor to the experiences gained through studying abroad and the internships that followed, Pardee provided Faina with a platform to explore her passions and pursue a career that aligns with her values. “BU was one of the best things that ever happened to me,” she says. “It taught me to see possibilities everywhere.”

Today, as Faina continues to work in impact investing, she remains a staunch advocate for global development, sustainable finance, and ethical business practices. Her journey proves that with the right academic and professional support, it’s possible to turn passion into a meaningful career dedicated to making a difference in the world.
