Heine Discusses Indonesia Joining BRICS

In a recent interview with Anand Naidoo, on The Heat, Ambassador Jorge Heine, Research Professor at Boston University’s Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies, dissects the significance of Indonesia’s recent joining of the BRICS group.
Along with Heine, Einar Tangen, Anton Fedyashin, and Gita Wirjawan joined this discussion which addressed the topic of Indonesia becoming the first Southeast Asian country to join BRICS; the bloc expanding to ten countries. Being the former ambassador of Chile to China, Heine focused on answering questions related to the Global South and Cuba.

In his interview, Heine argues that the joining of Indonesia makes BRICS into a very important platform for the Global South. Besides economics, it is changing the international order too. Entities such as the United Nations and Bretton Woods Foundation are focusing more on global issues such as financial indebtedness.
On the topic of Cuba, Heine expresses that former President Biden’s decision to overturn the status of Cuba as a state-sponsored terrorist was favourable as that title was unwarranted. This had also caused economic hardships in Cuba.
