On March 4, 2023, Ambassador Mark Storella, Professor of the Practice of Diplomacy at Boston University’s Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies and Director of the School’s African Studies Center, joined leading global affairs and political experts at the Principles First Summit to discuss and advance a more principled politics in the United States.

Storella participated in a panel – “America’s Foreign Policy Institutions & Putin’s War in Ukraine” – featuring retired Army Lt. General Mark Hertling, The Atlantic‘s Tom Nichols, and former Ambassador Roger Noriega. The four felt confident that American support for Ukraine would endure, despite isolationist views among some members of Congress and leading Republican candidates for president. They also agreed that American diplomacy, defense, and intelligence have proven remarkably resilient, despite the shocks the system endured during the Trump administration.

Panelists noted that the Biden administration has done well coordinating efforts of the foreign policy, military, and intelligence community more strategically than in recent years. Additionally, Storella urged that we explain that support for Ukraine is “forward defense,” supporting Ukraine’s ability “to fight there so we will never have to fight here.”
