Heine Comments on South American Fiber Project

Ambassador Jorge Heine, Research Professor at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, was featured in the Latin America Advisor, a publication of the Inter-American Dialogue, a Washington D.C. think tank.

Heine responded to the publication’s feature Q&A, which asked about a South American project to build an undersea fiber optic cable across the Pacific Ocean and how important it is to connectivity in the region. The project has buy in from Brazil, Chile, and Argentina with Paraguay, Uruguay, and Bolivia expressing interest.

In his response, Heine welcomed the news and expressed the needed for increased connectivity between the Asia-Pacific and South American considering the increased levels of trade between the two regions. However, Heine was quick to point out that this project is a long way from completion and represents a “a second-best option.”
