On January 23, 2021, Adil NajamDean of the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, keynoted a panel at the University of Zurich’s Global Negotiation Conference.

Taking place January 22-23, 2021, the virtual conference – Future of Global Cooperation: Ethics and Governance” – reflected on the role that diplomacy can play as a tool to overcome some of the most pressing issues facing the world.

During his panel, titled “For a New Global Social Contract,” Najam spoke about the future of the “global social contract.” Najam argued that a global social contract needs to arise not simply from expanding social contracts at the a national level to a global stage, but from an organic evolution of truly global norms and deeply global values. He used the example of global climate change as an indication of where a contract is needed and where the world has failed to deliver to date.

Details of the conference can be found on the University of Zurich’s website.
