Kevin Gallagher, Professor of Global Development Policy at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, said that common interests held between China and nations in Latin America made closer relations between the regions a ‘win-win’ situation.

Gallagher made the argument in an extensive Q&A session published on the online global news service The Cipher Brief. The September 30 interview was part of their Expert Commentary series.

From the text of the interview:

China’s increased economic involvement is very good for Latin America.  China came to the rescue of the region after the global financial crisis dried up demand for Latin American products in the region’s traditional export destinations in the United States and Europe.  That new Chinese demand helped spark the largest run of economic growth in the region since the 1970s.  This is also good for the United States, because a growing Latin America is a more stable one and one that demands more U.S. products.  Challenges abound, of course.
