Coast Guard Honors MET Grad as ‘Inspirational Student’

Executive Petty Officer Colin Smith (MET’14) has received the Vander Putten Inspirational Student of the Year Award from the U.S. Coast Guard. According to the news release, this award “recognizes the student who clearly demonstrated sustained high standards of academic proficiency and dedication, served as a role model in off-duty education accomplishment, and demonstrated the Coast Guard values of honor, respect, and devotion to duty.”

Smith earned both a Master of Science in Leadership and a Graduate Certificate in Project Management through Metropolitan College’s military base satellite program at MCAS Cherry Point, North Carolina. In addition to his academic accomplishments, he was cited for his volunteer efforts to support boating safety, watercraft firefighting instruction, and youth soccer in his community—all while on active duty at the Coast Guard’s Emerald Isle Station in North Carolina.
