International Travel
Registering travel
Faculty who are traveling internationally are encouraged to add their personal travel information into the BU International SOS Registry.
US citizens and nationals are also advised to register for the US DOS Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP)
- The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) is a free service to allow U.S. citizens and nationals traveling and living abroad to enroll their trip with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate. Benefits of enrolling in STEP include:
- Receive important information from the Embassy about safety conditions in your destination country, helping you make informed decisions about your travel plans.
- Help the U.S. Embassy contact you in an emergency, whether natural disaster, civil unrest, or family emergency.
- Help family and friends get in touch with you in an emergency.
Insurance while traveling internationally
For Faculty/Staff insurance:
- If you have either of BU’s Blue Cross Blue Shield plans as faculty/staff then you are covered by Blue Cross Blue Shield Global Core (log in with your BCBS Member ID number to see the full benefits).
- If you do not have insurance through BU you will need to check with your insurance provider and ensure that it meets the minimum benefits below:
- Emergency and urgent care covered
- At least $100,000 in medical coverage
- Medical Evacuation coverage
- If your policy does not meet the above minimum standards, then BU recommends signing up for the GeoBlue International health insurance policy.
- Note: there is a difference between faculty/staff coverage when you are accompanying students and when you are traveling alone. Please reach out to Global Programs Health Safety and Security with questions: globalhss@bu.edu.
If any faculty/staff have the need for emergency medical or political evacuation or travel assistance they are automatically covered by ACE/Chubb Executive Assistance through the Risk Management Office, which provides:
- pre-trip security and travel information
- emergency medical, personal, legal, and travel services
- emergency medical and political evacuation or repatriation
- concierge services
*Please note that the Chubb assistance only applies to BU employees; family members or students traveling with employees are not covered.
