Preparation and Expectations
Individual appointments with MET Career Development are available for degree-seeking MET students and alumni with career-related questions.
To make the most of your session, please review the following information:
Before Booking an Individual Appointment
- Group Advising Sessions: We highly encourage attending a “Let’s Talk” group advising session before scheduling an individual appointment, as many questions can be addressed there. Check the MET Events Calendar for upcoming sessions: MET Events Calendar.
- Appointment Booking: Please schedule only one 30-minute MET Career Development appointment at a time to ensure availability for all students seeking support. If multiple appointments are booked, we will retain the earliest appointment and cancel the subsequent ones.
Preparation
- Duration: Individual MET Career Development appointments are 30 minutes long.
- VMock: For assistance with your résumé, cover letter, LinkedIn profile, and interview preparation, please use VMock before your appointment. This will help us focus on more detailed feedback. Get started here: VMock Overview.
- Job Descriptions: If you have questions about résumé/cover letters or your internship/job search, bring a job description for a role you are interested in, have applied to, or plan to apply to. For virtual meetings, keep a copy accessible on your computer to guide our discussion.
- Resume/Cover Letter: Have your résumé and cover letter ready on your computer for virtual meetings and bring a printed copy for in-person meetings.
- Mock Interviews: If you are preparing for a mock interview, please send a copy of the job description for the role you are interested in at least 24 hours in advance.
- Other Topics: Prepare any additional questions or topics you wish to discuss. It will be helpful to have on hand any materials you have been working on. Please note that we may not be able to cover everything in one session.
Working Together and Follow-Up
During our session, we will collaborate to identify actionable steps that align with your career goals. While we won’t prescribe specific actions for you to take, we will support you in developing a clear plan and provide guidance to help you move forward effectively. After completing the action steps discussed, you are welcome to schedule a follow-up meeting to review your progress and address any additional questions or concerns.
Handshake Attendance Policy
There are very limited one-on-one appointments available, and missing an appointment prevents another student from having the opportunity to meet with an advisor.
By attending and actively participating, you demonstrate respect for others’ time and show punctuality, both of which are crucial for navigating the demands and expectations of the workplace effectively.
Appointment Cancellation
- If you cannot attend your appointment, please cancel it in Handshake at least 24 hours before the scheduled meeting time. This way another student can book the time slot in Handshake.
- If you do not cancel your appointment at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled time or inform us prior to the appointment about the cancellation, this will result in one strike. If you reach three strikes, your access to Handshake will be blocked until you meet with a member of the MET Career Development team to discuss possible reinstatement of your account.
- There are no consequences if you cancel and/or reschedule your appointment more than 24 hours in advance. However, if there is a pattern of repeatedly cancelling appointments, this could result in a strike.
- To cancel an appointment, go to Handshake and include a note to alert your advisor to the cancellation.
No Shows
- If you do not show up for your appointment, it will result in a strike.
- If you reach three strikes, your access to Handshake will be blocked. You must schedule a meeting with MET Career Development to discuss possible reinstatement of your account.
Late Attendance
- It is your responsibility to notify your advisor via email if you anticipate being late to the appointment.
- If you arrive more than 10 minutes late for the appointment, it will be considered a missed appointment, and you will need to reschedule. This will result in one strike.
Three Strikes
- When you have three strikes, your access to Handshake will be blocked.
- For consideration of reinstating your Handshake account, email metcareers@bu.edu to schedule a time to meet.
- Discuss the reasons for the missed appointments and review expectations for future attendance.
- Complete any assignments or actions deemed necessary by MET Career Development to demonstrate a commitment to professional behavior and accountability.
- Strikes will be recorded in our office for the academic year and will reset at the start of each fall semester. For example, if you have one strike during the spring semester, it will be reset at the beginning of the following fall semester.
The policy is subject to change at any point.
