I have a hold on my account. How do I get this removed so I can register?
Boston University requires all students be compliant with University requirements before registering for courses each semester. If you have a compliance hold on your account you must complete the steps to satisfy the requirement to have your hold lifted. Instructions for resolving compliance holds
In addition to Holds you may see Tasks assigned (Dashboard → My Information → Tasks). If an assigned Task is not completed by it’s respective deadline, you may have a Hold placed on your account. Stay on top of completing assigned Tasks to avoid future Holds.
Questions about your compliance requirements? Review the University Requirements for Registration.
I’m trying to drop a class but keep getting an error message. What do I do?
To drop a course or courses, visit the MyBU Student Portal. If you cannot drop your course you will receive an error message.
Common reasons students cannot drop a class themselves:
- It is past the deadline to drop the course
- Refer to the MET Academic Calendars to determine if the deadline to drop your course has passed. Note: online and on-campus course deadlines differ
- The student has a hold on their account due to outstanding compliance matters
- Holds can be found within your MyBU Student portal: Dashboard → My Information → Holds. Once you have resolved all holds you will be able to adjust your course registration. Instructions on how to resolve compliance holds
- The course(s) the student is trying to drop would bring them to zero units/courses in that semester
- If you are trying to drop to zero (0) units/courses in a semester, you cannot drop your course(s) yourself. You must complete an Enrollment Status Change Request to be dropped from your course(s).
Upon dropping course(s) or withdrawing from a semester, your account will be adjusted according to the University’s refund policy. Please be aware that the add/drop deadlines as noted on MET’s academic calendars may differ from the refund dates.
Detailed Instructions on Registration Changes (Add/Drop, Leave of Absence, Withdrawing)
Can I take courses in formats outside of that for which I was accepted?
U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents may register for online, on campus or blended courses that meet their program requirements. It is recommended that you primarily take classes in the format for which you applied. If you decide that you will be primarily taking classes in a different format, please notify your advisor so that your program registration status may be updated.
International students (non-U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents) who are enrolled in an online program must notify their academic advisor prior to registering for on-campus or blended courses to receive guidance on the necessary requirements from the International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO).
International students (non-U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents) who are enrolled in an on-campus program must notify their academic advisor prior to registering for online or blended courses to receive approval to ensure they maintain status according to International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO) policy. In general, the ISSO requires that F-1 visa holders registered for an online or blended course in any given semester must also be registered for 8+ units of on-campus course (2+ courses). As a result, international students taking an online or blended course must maintain full-time registration status. 12 units (3 classes) is considered a full-time course load for MET graduate students.
Can I register for a graduate course offered through another college or school at BU?
Yes, you may take classes outside of MET for your own enrichment, but you must obtain permission from that particular college or school to register.
If you would like for the course to be counted toward your program requirements, you must also obtain permission from your Academic Advisor prior to registration. Please email the course description and syllabus to your designated program coordinator to determine whether it can count towards your degree program or not.

Are there any scholarships or financial assistance for International Students?
